Crypto Market Manipulation and DeFi Cases: When Price Becomes Collateral

Whistleblower Justice Network

A trader can use crypto market manipulation to turn a token’s price into borrowing power, as the Mango Markets DeFi cases alleged. In its Mango Markets action, the Securities and Exchange Commission alleged that a trader inflated a trading position to drain assets other users had deposited. If you know who controlled the accounts, why the trades were placed or how the platform valued the position, you may know the connection behind the price chart.

This page follows the Mango Markets allegations from the token purchases to the borrowing calculation and customer funds. Our broader page on manufactured prices and trading activity covers the shared market-manipulation patterns.

How a Token Price Becomes Borrowing Power

A price feed can connect trading on one cryptocurrency exchange to borrowing on another. The Justice Department’s account of the Mango Markets indictment and criminal complaint described a platform where investors could buy, sell and borrow cryptocurrency, and trade perpetual futures. Those contracts gave investors exposure to changes in one cryptocurrency’s value relative to another.

In that account, Mango Markets used an oracle, a computer program drawing prices from cryptocurrency exchanges, to determine settlement prices for its perpetual futures. A trader holding a position that benefited from a rising MNGO price could therefore see that position increase in value as the token rose against USD Coin.

The Justice Department’s charging account also described funding payments between the parties to a perpetual-futures contract. Those payments compared the midpoint of bid and ask prices with the oracle price and were designed to keep the contract’s purchase price close to its settlement price.

The same criminal charging account described how Mango Markets calculated borrowing limits from deposits, trading positions and existing borrowing. The platform tracked the relationship between those assets and liabilities as account health. The cryptocurrency available to withdraw came from other investors’ deposits. Someone working on valuation or borrowing limits would recognize why the input price mattered to more than the trading screen.

Mango Markets and the Alleged Collateral Loop

The Securities and Exchange Commission’s January 2023 announcement alleged that a trader borrowed and withdrew approximately $116 million in crypto assets by inflating the value of a MNGO perpetual-futures position. The alleged sequence began with accounts under the same trader’s control and ended with other users’ assets leaving the platform.

First, the Securities and Exchange Commission alleged, the trader used one Mango Markets account to sell a large amount of MNGO perpetual futures and another account to buy those same contracts. The Justice Department’s account of the criminal indictment and complaint described the trader as owning both the long position, which benefited from a rising price, and the short position, which benefited from a falling one. Both sides of the trade answered to one trader.

Next came purchases of the token itself. The Securities and Exchange Commission alleged that the trader bought large quantities of thinly traded MNGO to raise its price relative to USD Coin, increasing the value of the perpetual futures. In its separate civil charging announcement, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission alleged that the purchases occurred on three exchanges supplying the oracle’s inputs. The CFTC said the oracle-reported MNGO price jumped more than 13-fold in 30 minutes.

The SEC alleged that the trader then used the increased position value to borrow and withdraw the platform’s available assets. When the token price returned to its earlier level, the platform was left at a deficit. In the SEC’s allegation, we see a borrower manufacturing his own backing. The collateral rose on the screen. Other people’s deposits left the platform.

What the Price Feed Actually Reported

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission described the Mango scheme as oracle manipulation: purchases on the exchanges supplying the price feed drove up the value reported to Mango Markets. That gives an insider a concrete comparison: the trades that moved the underlying market, the prices the oracle reported and the position values Mango Markets used. Each connection has its own records.

An exchange employee may know which accounts placed the orders. A pricing or engineering employee may know which exchange prices entered the feed and how the resulting number reached the borrowing calculation. We connect those observations to the trade and account records.

The same focus on inputs appears in fund valuation cases involving altered prices. In the Securities and Exchange Commission’s case involving Infinity Q, the agency alleged that the investment executive changed pricing-service code, supplied false inputs and used unsuitable models to inflate valuations. For an insider, the comparison is the stated pricing process against the inputs and decisions that actually produced the number.

Which Agency Brought Which Mango Allegations?

The Securities and Exchange Commission and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission brought separate civil actions against the trader, while the Justice Department brought criminal charges. The SEC’s announcement said MNGO had been offered and sold as a security and alleged that the trader manipulated its price to drain the platform’s assets. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission described the leveraged positions as swaps and alleged a fraudulent and manipulative scheme involving their value. The Justice Department’s February 2023 account identified charges of commodities fraud, commodities market manipulation and wire fraud.

The Records an Insider Can Connect

The strongest account connects trading activity to account control, valuation and the movement of customer funds. The Mango allegations make those connections visible, and our work on the records behind a reported number starts with what you know about them:

  • Accounts and trades. Order records and account-control information connect the token purchases and opposing positions to the trader directing them.
  • Prices and position values. Exchange prices, oracle inputs and the platform’s valuation calculation show how the market price reached the account.
  • Borrowing and withdrawals. Account balances, borrowing calculations and withdrawal records connect the inflated position to the assets taken from the platform.
  • Decisions and communications. The Justice Department’s criminal charging account described MNGO holders’ right to vote on changes to Mango Markets and governance of the Mango DAO, which ran the platform. Trading instructions, account-control discussions and governance records can help connect decisions to those who made them.

A study of occupational fraud, The Significance of Whistleblowing as an Anti-Fraud Measure, published in the Journal of Forensic & Investigative Accounting in 2018, found that whistleblowing was the most common detection method in its sample. Its analysis also found a relationship between the number of people involved in a scheme and detection through whistleblowing:

when more individuals are involved in a fraud scheme, it is more likely that whistleblowing will be the principal detection method.

In a trading business, you may know why an order was placed or who directed activity across accounts. We put that knowledge beside the transactions and valuation records so the account explains the decisions as well as the movements of money.

Whistleblower Rewards and Crypto Evidence

The Securities and Exchange Commission and Commodity Futures Trading Commission programs can pay eligible whistleblowers 10% to 30% of qualifying monetary sanctions collected. We assess your information and the reporting route with you, including the evidence that connects the trading conduct to the agency’s action.

Where the fraud involves government money, a whistleblower case under the False Claims Act can pay 15% to 30% of what the government recovers. We work through the applicable program with you and bring in crypto fraud whistleblower lawyers with the expertise your evidence calls for.
