Crypto fraud evidence connects the internal ledger with the blockchain, then connects both to the people who controlled the money and knew how it was being used. A transaction hash supplies a starting point. An employee may know which customer received the credit, who authorized the withdrawal, or why the balance customers saw differed from the assets the business held. Those connections turn a visible movement of money into an account of what happened inside the business.
A blockchain transaction records where value moved, when and in what amount. An address label supplied by an analytics service adds an attribution that needs its own support. The useful question is what connects that address to an account, a controller or a customer.
The owner of the assets, the person who could move them and the employee who knew why they moved can be different people. We connect the public transaction to the exchange ledger, bank records, permissions and communications that explain each role. A name beside a wallet on a tracing diagram is the beginning of that work.
A transaction hash does not prove crypto wallet ownership by itself. A hosted wallet provider receives, stores and transmits value for customers, and transfers on its internal ledger need not appear individually on the blockchain. The federal guidance on virtual-currency business models makes the provider’s independent control central to the hosted-wallet model.
For an exchange employee reconciling balances, the public transfer shows movement between addresses while the internal ledger identifies the customer credited. A transfer between customer accounts can change their balances without creating another public transaction to follow.
Bank records add the part of the movement conducted in dollars. A customer can send money through a bank account, convert it on an exchange and then transfer cryptocurrency. The deposit, conversion and customer credit belong beside one another when we examine what the business received and how it used the funds. The employee who understands those records can explain a connection that a public trace leaves open.
The balance customers saw and the money the business held can be different numbers. The Goliath criminal complaint alleges that actual deposits and invented returns appeared together in an investor portal. For someone working on that portal or reconciling its balances, how the return was calculated matters as much as where the deposit arrived.
Key possession, withdrawal permissions and approval authority show who could move customer assets. The operating arrangement matters: a hosted provider has control over customer value, an unhosted-wallet user controls their own transactions, and a multisignature arrangement depends on the actual keys and approvals. Calling a system multisig leaves the practical question open: whose approval could make a transfer happen?
Code privileges can matter alongside the keys. We examine the permissions, withdrawal authority and contract rules that governed the funds, then compare them with the authority the business described to customers. A developer who understands a privileged withdrawal path or an employee who approved transfers can explain how the system actually operated.
A service described as decentralized may still have an operator conducting the business and exercising control. For a whistleblower, the valuable detail is the permission or instruction that made the movement possible.
Crypto tracing evidence becomes more useful when internal exchange records connect control and knowledge to the movement of funds. Customer promises, internal corrections, warnings and escalation histories help show what the business represented and who understood its actual conduct. We compare those records with the use of customer money.
A promise about custody raises questions about keys and withdrawal authority. A promise about liquidity raises questions about transfers and the ability to return customer funds. A promise about investment returns raises questions about the activity that supposedly earned them. The employee who knows why those accounts diverged can connect the public statement to the decision behind it.
Timing gives a warning its significance. What was communicated, who received it and what decision followed help explain the company’s knowledge. A revised statement, an internal correction or a transfer instruction belongs beside the earlier representation and the movement of funds. We work with the person who saw those decisions to establish the connection.
Manufactured trading volume presents a different version of the same problem. In its criminal guilty plea, Gotbit Consulting admitted offenses involving wash trading that fabricated volume for client tokens. The displayed activity made trading demand appear to exist. For an employee working on trading systems, beneficial account control, bot parameters, client invoices and internal volume ledgers can connect that display to the instructions behind it.
The Goliath and Debiex documents connect public movements to very different private records. Goliath’s complaint puts bank records, exchange records and investor accounts alongside blockchain analysis. The Debiex orders distinguish the business running a false trading platform from the exchange holding traced assets. Both distinctions matter to an insider explaining who did what.
Goliath Ventures promised investors returns from cryptocurrency liquidity pools, according to the criminal complaint and supporting affidavit against its chief executive. Investigators compared that promise with bank accounts, cryptocurrency transfers and investor records. In the criminal guilty plea described by the Justice Department’s later announcement, the chief executive admitted causing investor losses.
The affidavit says IRS Criminal Investigation asked Chainalysis Government Solutions to analyze Goliath’s known wallets. The analysis included documents from Coinbase and investors as well as blockchain transactions. The affidavit alleged that little investor money reached liquidity pools, while funds went to Goliath representatives and earlier investors.
Control came from additional evidence. The affidavit identified the chief executive as the sole signatory on one Goliath bank account and its Coinbase wallets, and a co-signatory on another bank account. It also described directors telling an investor that the chief executive determined allocations and directed transfers. Account authority and statements about actual instructions supplied the human connection behind the flow.
According to the complaint, investors saw invented profits on money that was paying earlier investors. The portal accurately reflected principal invested but manufactured the returns, the complaint alleged:
Instead, balances were artificially manipulated to reflect promised returns, creating a false appearance of consistent profitability.
United States of America v. Delgado, criminal complaint, paragraph 41, government allegation
The affidavit alleged that the return offered to each investor determined the return displayed. We see the calculation running backward: start with the promise, then manufacture the performance to match. For an employee who worked with those balances, the calculation and the underlying transactions explain different parts of the deception alleged in the complaint.
The Commodity Futures Trading Commission’s case against Debiex separated the supposed trading platform from an outside exchange holding customer assets. In its order against Debiex, the court found that the business’s officers or managers directed a scheme involving phony customer relationships, websites mimicking a trading platform and false trading records. Customers saw invented gains that encouraged them to deposit more.
The companion order concerning a recipient’s wallet described customer-service representatives controlling the information displayed to customers. Customers saw purported balances, trades and profits while their digital assets moved through other wallets. We see a trading screen serving as a sales pitch for the next deposit. For someone inside platform operations, the authority to alter the screen is a separate fact from the authority to move the assets.
The order traced a customer’s assets through several wallets and a conversion from Ether to Tether before reaching a wallet hosted at an unnamed exchange. That exchange voluntarily preserved the assets. The court kept its identity out of the order because the CFTC did not believe it was connected to Debiex’s fraud.
The traced destination, the account holder, the people operating the false platform and the exchange preserving assets had different roles. We want the insider’s explanation of those roles, supported by account and control records, so that the account of the scheme follows what each participant actually did.
Useful proof connects your personal knowledge to the entities, dates, accounts, transfers, promises and decisions involved. We distinguish what you witnessed from what a document records and what an analyst inferred. Knowing where a record sits and who can explain it tells us what connects those pieces.
The source of an account export or transaction analysis matters alongside its contents. Questions about protected compliance records belong in that conversation with our whistleblower experts and crypto whistleblower lawyers.
The conduct and the contribution of your information help us assess an SEC crypto whistleblower report or a CFTC crypto whistleblower report. The SEC and CFTC whistleblower programs can award qualifying whistleblowers a combined 10% to 30% of the money collected in a covered action. The person who can explain why a transfer occurred, how a balance was created or who approved an exception gives those records their context.
If you can explain the ledger, the withdrawal authority or the promise behind a crypto transfer, speak to our whistleblower experts about why the money moved. We build the case with you and bring in crypto whistleblower lawyers who understand custody systems, investment claims and trading conduct. We stay alongside you as your knowledge of the business becomes part of the case against the people responsible.
